HIS Sign Successfully Launches Deaf Friendly Business Certification Program in Frederick, Maryland

deaf friendly ribbonOn Monday, January 13, 2014, HIS Sign successfully inaugurated its Deaf Friendly Business Certification program with the Frederick County Maryland Chamber of Commerce. The Frederick County Chamber of Commerce becomes the first organization to be awarded the HIS Sign Deaf Friendly Business Certificate by participating in HIS Sign’s training program. The training involved learning about Deaf Culture, different communication modalities used in the Deaf community, how to work with an interpreter, and learning some simple signs as well as the manual alphabet. The Fredrick Chamber will now be listed on HIS Sign’s future Deaf Friendly business website as well as having their own web page. One Chamber staff member who participated in the program mentioned the benefits of participating in the program: “This is a great program for the Frederick Community as a whole and for our Chamber businesses in particular.”

HIS Sign CEO Christina Hammrich, a longtime supporter of equal access and diversity for the Deaf community, is also enthusiastic about the program. “I am really excited by the launch of this program because I feel it is a great way for our agency to support equal communication access for the Deaf community,” she said.

HIS Sign is now opening their Deaf Friendly Business Certification program to the many businesses and organizations who are members of the Chamber, as well as offering training to any business or organization that would like to become certified as a Deaf Friendly business.
