Atlanta Braves Draft Deaf High School Catcher Chase Smartt

The Atlanta Braves selected Charles Henderson High School (Alabama) catcher Chase Smartt in the 35th round of Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday, June 10, 2015.

Smartt, who is deaf, was named the Class 5A Hitter and Player of the Year for the 2015 season by the Alabama Sports Writers Association and was selected for AL.com’s Super All-State Baseball Team.

Chase is among the AHSAA’s all-time career leaders in hits, doubles, batting average and RBIs. He was the 1,050th player picked in this year’s draft and the second taken straight out of an Alabama high school.
