Gallaudet University and NAD’s Take on the ASL vs. Cochlear Implant Debate

Oftentimes when I child is first diagnosed with a hearing loss, the parents go into action and try to find a potential solution.  Because these parents have no research behind their decisions, they’re often left at the mercy of their doctor.  Cochlear implants are one of the solutions offered to parents.  These same doctors will also discourage parents about teaching their deaf child ASL.

Below is a video produced by Gallaudet University and National Association of the Deaf (NAD) dispelling the myth that ASL can be harmful or “bad” for a young deaf child.
