Birmingham Minister Finds His Calling in Deaf Ministry

ministerThe Rev. Tyler Walworth didn’t start with a vision of ministering to the deaf — instead, the ministry found him.

A lifelong lover of languages, Walworth was finishing up his undergraduate degree at Concordia University and decided to take American Sign Language for fun.

Walworth met Steven Schumacher, who taught at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Ind., and eventually began teaching deaf ministry classes there himself.

Walworth, 26, graduated from the seminary in May 2015 and is now ordained as a Lutheran minister. In June, he became pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church of the Deaf, which uses the facilities of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Birmingham.
